Apple's Watch Series 11 Evaluation: Excellent Gesture Control featuring Improved Power Endurance

This latest Apple Watch 11th generation introduces the improvement many users really need from their wrist gadget: longer battery life.

In other aspects, the updated device functions as a straightforward upgrade for the Series 10, maintaining similarity in appearance, dimensions and features, with many of enhancements derived from the operating system.

The latest version is also priced £30 lower within the United Kingdom, costing from 369 pounds (449 euros/$399 USD/A$679), placed higher than the newly revamped Watch SE at £219 in the budget category and the premium Ultra 3 at £749 in the premium segment.

Design and Display

Following the design of Series 10, this updated version comes in at 9.7 millimeters in thickness, which makes it a slim fit to the wrist, easy to sneak beneath shirt sleeves and easier to wear during sleep.

The 2,000nit OLED screen remains sufficiently luminous for seeing inside and outside, remaining clear when viewed from different angles, enabling quickly looking to check time or alerts straightforward.

Protecting the display using glass reportedly twice as scratch resistant as before, while not reaching the hardness as sapphire, which is reserved with the higher-end titanium editions.

Capability and Runtime

The updated wearable features identical S10 processor as last year's model while adding support for cellular 5G capability and stronger reception when you're away from civilization.

Energy storage show improvement in size by 9% and 11% for the 42mm and 46 millimeter models respectively.

The 46mm achieved approximately two days in our assessment with sleep tracking when not used for fitness.

Typical wearers will just about monitor two full days with overnight use prior to requiring power, requiring just over an hour using a 20W or more powerful adapter (not included), reaching approximately 70 percent in half an hour.

If you do engage in exercise, battery endurance reaches approximately eight hours for monitoring, sufficient duration for a marathon or two.

Operating System Updates

The latest device includes updated software, compatible with each iteration starting from Series 6 and newer.

This includes recently introduced Liquid Glass design, which makes display features somewhat see-through, along with additional display styles: an expansive digital display named Flow reacting to motion plus an analog display called Exactograph, which breaks out chronological elements into their own dials.

The best new feature is the wrist-flick gesture, where you rapidly twist your arm outward then returning to close applications returning to the home screen.

It works even without looking at the device to look at the watch, allowing users to turn off alerts using a quick gesture of the wrist.

Health and Fitness Tracking

The Apple Watch features the same comprehensive wellness tracking package of tools available in prior generations but adds a couple of new features and revamped workout app.

High BP warnings check for symptoms of high blood pressure over a 30-day period, notifying you to seek medical advice when pulse information suggests you may have a hidden problem.

Updated sleep scoring improves sleep monitoring simpler to understand, like other brands from multiple companies.

Every day the screen presents a percentage score that is broken down across three areas: sleep length, timing and disturbances, each straightforward and available via the health software through your mobile also.

Exercise companion is an AI coach employing your past activity records to give you encouragement around exercise sessions, including identifying existing workout history regular activity patterns and exertion levels you put it.

It also provides audible heads-up when attaining specific targets during exercise, like specific speed, cardiac rhythm, distance, duration or further statistics.

There is a choice among three vocal styles, which speak to you through connected audio paired with the device for one of 12 activities, like strolling, sprinting or cycling.

But, this feature depends on when you bring along recent smartphones with you, proving inconvenient enough that I would forgo the function preventing inconvenience carrying mobile devices.

Apple says energy storage maintains exceeding 1000 full power cycles maintaining 80 percent of its original capacity and is replaceable for £95.
